Redwood Dojo has offered Cuong Nhu karate for adults since our doors opened in January 1992. Since then, students of all ages—from their teens to their seventies—have pursued the many benefits of traditional martial arts training.
A mixed Adult/Teen class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6 to 7:30 pm, and Saturday mornings (outdoors) from 9:30 to 10:30 am. Advanced adults meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7 to 8:30 pm. Your goal should be to attend two to three days per week on a regular basis.
From time to time, a new group of beginning adults will get started and train together during the Tuesday/Thursday 7 to 8:30 class. Click here to get your name on the list for the next group starting.
Adults join class for many different reasons, and we welcome them all:
Some are concerned about self-defense and want to learn some skills and gain confidence.
Others always wanted to try martial arts. Often (admit it!) they were inspired by a movie, tv show or documentary.
Some just want a great workout that won’t get boring after a short time.
Others are attracted by the mental and physical discipline, the beauty and grace of the movements.
Still others take it up because their children are enrolled and they want to share a family activity. Many of these adults end up staying long after their kids have moved on to other interests.
Regardless of initial reasons for joining, everyone who trains in traditional martial arts at Redwood Dojo can gain all these benefits and more.
What do we mean by “traditional martial arts”? This phrase means different things to different people. Here at Redwood Dojo, we wear white Japanese-style karate uniforms. Our class structure is formal and includes certain rituals traditionally followed in Japanese dojos and other Asian martial arts schools. We believe an important goal of training is to challenge and improve ourselves as people, and not just to acquire specific skills. We enjoy the workout, and at the same time take it seriously. We recognize that mastery of a physical art takes focus and concentration. The formal structure of class gives due respect to the art.
The best way to learn what traditional training is like at Redwood Dojo is to come try a free class. Free trial classes are currently offered during the Tuesday/Thursday 6 to 7:30 p.m. mixed teen and adult class.
