2014 Holiday Schedule

Happy Holidays to all, as the year draws rapidly to a close!

As has become our tradition, we will hold classes on a reduced schedule in the days right before Christmas, and between the 25th and the New Year, we will travel to our sister school in Berkeley to work out with our fellow Cuong Nhu members.

Here are the specifics of the Redwood Dojo Holiday Schedule:

Monday, December 22: All classes meet as usual.
Tuesday, December 23: All kids, all ranks, all ages 8 & up, meet at 5 p.m. (no class at 4 p.m.).
Teens and Adults meet together from 6 to 7:30 (no 7 to 8:30 class).

No classes at Redwood Dojo from December 24 through January 2. Redwood Dojo students are welcome and encouraged to visit Berkeley Cuong Nhu Karate (Rohai Dojo) to take class on Saturday, December 27, Monday the 29th, and Tuesday the 30th. Please click on the image to view the schedule. NOTE: “Tigers” are kids age 4-5.

Rohai Dojo Holiday Schedule

Classes resume at Redwood Dojo on Saturday, January 3.

Reminder: Summer Holiday Schedule

During the month of August, we operate on a “Summer Holiday Schedule,” combining most of the kids’ classes into one section, and temporarily moving the “peewee class” to Tuesdays from its regular Monday slot.

We hope this will work for those of you who are not away on vacation. Dedicated, ongoing training is what martial arts is all about—so plan to attend class, and if you have problems with the schedule, please let Sensei Didi know.

Pre-Karate (ages 4 ½ – 5) will meet on TUESDAY (instead of Monday) at 4 pm.
All kids age 6 and up, all ranks, will meet Tuesday and Thursday, 5 to 6 pm.
*Adults and teens will train together: Tuesday and Thursday, 6 to 7:30 pm.*
Saturday morning class meets as usual, 9:30 to 10:30 am outdoors (ages 6 through adult).

*There will be some open training time available for adults and advanced students who wish to stay later. Teens accustomed to bowing out at 7 p.m. are encouraged to train for the full 1.5 hours, to get a taste of adult-level training.

There will be no classes on Labor Day Weekend (August 30 – September 1). Our normal schedule resumes Tuesday, September 2. The first Fall class for ages 6 and 7 will be on Thursday, September 4.

Thanks for your participation at Redwood Dojo!

As we mentioned in our last post, Torfeh and Greg (adult class members) had a great idea: Send a photo of yourself in a martial arts pose, from wherever you are visiting on vacation. We’d love to see more – and, with your permission, post them here! Email your photos to didi[at]

Summer News and Do’s

Torfeh Death Valley, CA 2014
Summer is officially here, and many members of kids’ class – as well as teens and adults – are following new schedules and taking off on vacation.

Please DO let Sensei Didi know what your schedule and participation will be for the summer months.

Your martial arts instructors care about your individual progress, and plan your classes accordingly. The “default expectation” in Cuong Nhu Karate is that you will be in class! Please let us know when you will be missing. Many of you have informed Sensei Didi of your summer plans, and she thanks you for your good manners.

Here’s a fun thing to DO:

Adult class members Torfeh and Greg had a great idea. This summer, wherever you go for travel or fun, snap a picture of yourself in one of your favorite martial arts poses, and send it to redwoodojo[at] We’ll post your pics here on the blog – like a postcard from your vacation. They’ve agreed to get things started with the two wonderful pictures from Death Valley you see here. Greg Death Valley, CA 2014

Kudos to Danielle

One of our fine teen students and Leadership Program members, Danielle Pohlson, has been honored with an award for her involvement in community, school and softball. It’s called the Arnold Kelly Scholarship, and it puts away $1000 toward her future college tuition. Danielle is an outstanding softball athlete who makes a point to keep up her Cuong Nhu attendance during softball season, even finding extra time to come help with the kids’ classes. Congratulations, Danielle, on a well-deserved honor!

End-of-Session Testing

Students who attend class today (June 23) or tomorrow, who are eligible for testing based on both attendance and knowledge of required curriculum, will be scheduled for an end-of-session test date. Unfortunately, if you are not in class, you cannot be evaluated for testing and you’ll have to wait a bit longer. Please contact Sensei Didi if you have any questions.

August Class Schedule – Notice of Change

We will be implementing our “Summer Holiday Schdule” this year, for the month of August only. During August, all kids, all ranks, will attend class together on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 6 p.m. Teens and Adults will train together from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The Peewee Class schedule for August is not yet set; keep an eye on this site for updates. Our normal schedule will resume, as always, in September.

Yes there’s class today! …and other news

From Sensei Didi:

There will be a special Martin Luther King Day workout in the park for the Monday classes: Peewees at 4 p.m., age 6 & 7 at 5 p.m. Please wear shoes (no flip-flops), and if it’s cold out, dress warmly! The 5 p.m. class might end early (instructor’s discretion) since it gets dark by 6.

In other news… The year is off to a great start, with kids’ classes bigger than ever. We love the high level of participation, and are also alert to the problem of keeping things focused and orderly in large groups. The instructors and I have many tricks up our sleeves, and we’ll pull them out as needed! Feedback from parents is always welcome.

Martial arts isn’t just for kids; in fact, this is a great time for parents and other adults to get involved. Karate is such a popular activity for children these days, I think people sometimes forget that its origins are very serious and “grown up,” and traditional martial arts continues to be an excellent, long-term activity for adults interested in mental and physical fitness. Come check out our Adult Class on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m., or Teen/Adult Class, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6.

Class Schedule for Christmas/New Year’s Break

cookiesWith Christmas and New Year falling mid-week this year, there will be fewer classes than we usually offer over the holiday break. Students are encouraged (as always!) to attend as many classes as you can, and practice on your own when you can’t come to class.

Redwood Dojo’s last class of 2013 will be on Saturday morning, December 21, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the park. (If the weather is bad, we’ll practice indoors, so come by even if it’s cold or rainy.)

Our first class of 2014 will be on Saturday morning, January 4, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the park. Again, the indoor option may be available in case of bad weather.

Saturday morning class is open to all students age 6 through adult.

While Redwood Dojo is on hiatus, Redwood students are invited to attend holiday classes at Rohai Dojo in Berkeley. Rohai, aka Berkeley Cuong Nhu Karate, is located at 1819 San Pablo Avenue (1.5 blocks north of University Avenue). Phone 510-526-4880 for more info, or if you get lost on the way. December Schedule, Gift Ideas, & More

The holiday class schedule is now available; pick up a copy in class this week (Monday students received theirs today), or download it here. As always – since our facility is closed between Christmas and New Year’s – we encourage Redwood Dojo students of all ages to attend class at Rohai Dojo, our sister school in Berkeley, during the break. The Rohai Dojo schedule is included on our handout, along with the address, directions and phone number.

We just put in a big order for sparring gear for purple belts and above, and the students are looking forward to adding more sparring-related drills to their training. If you didn’t turn in your order form in time, don’t panic; you can still purchase gear. However, you might not get your choice of colors, and we can’t guarantee the 20% discount offered for this group order. Contact Sensei Didi ASAP if you want to get your gear before year’s end!

Need any last-minute gift ideas? Well…sparring gear is one… and here are a few more:

The Redwood Dojo t-shirt – still available in many sizes, gray or white with a full-color design by Alejandro (from the Redwood Heights office), printed with a small logo in front and a large design on back.

Only $15! Some shirts printed with the front logo only are available for $12. Profits from t-shirt sales go toward the international training camp scholarship fund.

The Kids’ Karate Workbook: a take-home training guide for young martial artists. Sensei Didi’s book covers our curriculum from white to purple belt, with many extras – including background information and training tips that martial artists of any rank should have on hand. Kids Karate WorkbookAnd the book goes beyond our dojo and style; it’s suitable to recommend to friends and family who study other martial arts – different styles of karate or taekwondo. The cover price is $18.95, but you can save $$ by buying directly from Sensei Didi.

redwood-patchThe Redwood Dojo sleeve patch makes a nice stocking-stuffer for only $3.

A square kicking target is a great tool for practicing at home (with appropriate adult supervision). We’re selling some used targets, and you can name your own price ($5 – $10 suggested, depending on condition of target). All proceeds will go to the scholarship fund, which will help students attend the Cuong Nhu international training camp in May. Limited stock! Claim yours by contacting Sensei Didi.

Important Info about the MLKing Day Holiday

Monday, January 16th is a holiday in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, and Redwood Heights will be closed along with all other city facilities. However, in keeping with Redwood Dojo tradition, Sensei Didi will meet with students in the peewee karate class outdoors, in front of the main entrance, at their regular class time – 4 p.m. on Monday. Part of the hour will be “karate story time” – so if it’s chilly out, bundle up! Parents of new students who wish to buy a uniform may do so on Monday if you are paying by check. If you have questions about payment (or any other subject) please email didi[at]

Please note: Only the 4 p.m. “peewee” class will meet on Monday the 16th. The 5 p.m. class for ages 6 & 7 is cancelled*; members of that class should attend a make-up class on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Keep in mind, too, that the Saturday 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. outdoor class is always available for make-ups (for students age 6 & up).

*Why is the 5 p.m. class cancelled, when 4 p.m. is not? Sunset on January 16th is at 5:14 p.m. We don’t have a sufficiently well-lit outdoor space to safely hold a class of that size.

December Happenings

First of all, congratulations to all Redwood Dojo members who competed in the Hoa Sen dojo kata tournament today! We had a great turnout, and the competitors showed excellent spirit as well as technique. We’ll post congratulations by name once the official winners/participants list is provided by the host.

Next Saturday, December 10th, is Rohai Dojo’s annual Spar Wars tournament – a fun, low-cost opportunity for some friendly sparring competition, as well as padded sword sparring for purple belts and above (sword sparring is open to all ranks teens and adults). Visit the Rohai Dojo events page for flyers and registration forms, or call Rohai at 526-4880 if you have questions. The event begins at 12 noon.

Our December Free Workout for Adults is coming up this Tuesday. Click here to pre-register. We know it’s hard to fit in extra activities during December – but think of it this way: You’ll be getting a jump on your New Year’s resolutions (you know you’re going to be making them again: health, fitness, self-defense, new challenges). Try out the class and get registered now. One less thing to worry about over the holidays, and when January comes, you’ll already be on your way.

Some important holiday schedule information:

On Thursday, December 22, there will be only one kids’ class: All kids, all ranks will attend from 5 to 6 p.m. Teens and adults will meet as usual.

The week of December 26th, Redwood Heights – like all city facilities – will be closed. Therefore, Redwood Dojo classes will meet at our Sister School, Berkeley Cuong Nhu Karate (Rohai Dojo), on Tuesday, December 27th, and Thursday, December 29th. Kids’ class will meet at 5 p.m.; teens and adults will meet at 6 p.m. There may be classes scheduled on Wednesday the 28th as well. Further details to come.

Important Schedule Information for August 2011

In keeping with our long-standing annual tradition, we’ll be combining all the kids’ classes into a single section for the month of August, due to traditionally low attendance as people take their last vacations of the summer. For those who remain in town, it’s a great chance for the younger and newer students to train with the more advanced kids, and an opportunity for those senior-rank children to fulfill their position as role models, and help out the younger students.

This notice was just posted over on the Schedule page:

FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST ONLY: All kids’ classes (age 6 & up) are combined into a single section, TUESDAY AND THURSDAY, 5 TO 6 P.M. That means NO Monday 5pm class; NO Tuesday/Thursday 4pm classes; ONLY Tuesday/Thursday 5pm for kids of all ages and ranks. The regular schedule resumes Thursday, September 1st.
Pre-Karate for ages 4.5 – 5 continues to meet on Monday at 4 p.m.
There will be no classes on Labor Day, September 5, 2011.
